I grew up in a retail sales environment. And a rather unusual one at that.

In 1958 (with the ink barely dry on his MBA from Harvard), my dad decided to open his Asian art and antique shop on the Main Street of a tiny, resort mountain community called Highlands.

Everyone (including my mother, I think) thought he was crazy.

The short version of the story is that he proved everyone wrong and for over 50 years, has had a very profitable and regionally-renowned business.

I grew up working in his shop. My jobs ranged from what I referred to as “sh** jobs” like polishing bronze usubatas for 8 hours a day or bagging rocks for ikebana containers to more interesting work like creating exceptional customer experiences, buying inventory, and artfully displaying merchandise.

I did not realize until much later the incredible value of everything my dad taught me in his shop filled with exquisite art from the far corners of the world: most especially the fine art of selling.

When I say selling, I do not mean the “we’re dealin’!” kind of selling. Or the “how can I put you in a car today?” kind of selling. I mean the kind of selling that comes from a deeply rooted place of service, selflessness, and, yes, love. Love first and foremost for your clients and also for your craft, product, or service.

And a love of teaching.

My dad is an amazing teacher. He relishes having the opportunity to take someone (either literally or figuratively) by the hand and open their world to the wonders of Japanese ceramics, Persian rugs, netsuke, ikebana, cultured pearls, scrolls, wood block prints, and tea ceremonies. His knowledge has no bottom and his passion is completely contagious.

Periodically throughout the day, I would find my dad holding court next to an item in the store. Enraptured customers stood transfixed as my dad would explain ancient history, eastern philosophy and culture, enameling and carving techniques, and the intricacies of creating certain works of art.

When the story ended, customers would take the object of the impromptu lesson to the counter, cradling it like a newborn, and reach ceremoniously for their checkbooks. And each year, they returned to the shop, looking for a new “find” and another lesson from Dad.

Because his approach is at once elegant, respectful, authentic, and successful. He educates his customers, becomes their trusted advisor, and creates life-long, repeat business relationships based upon integrity.
